Fact-Checking Policy

Durbin News is committed to publishing accurate, verified and relevant information. Every story goes through several verification steps before it is published.

Core principles of verification

Reliability: We assess the credibility, identity and relevance of our sources.

More than one source: Important claims, figures and events are cross-checked with more than one independent source wherever possible.

Evidence: We confirm information through documents, data, official records, photos or videos and eyewitness accounts.

Context: We present facts with proper context to avoid misinterpretation.

Verification while reporting

  • Reporters keep notes of sources, times, places, names, titles, figures and quotations.
  • We make efforts to seek comment from the parties concerned.
  • If information seems incomplete or doubtful, it is checked further before publication.

Editorial checks before publication

Before publication, the editorial team usually reviews:

  • Names, titles, spelling, dates, places, figures and units (for example taka, kilometres, percentages)
  • Whether quotations are accurate and their meaning unchanged
  • Whether the headline matches the story, so that it does not mislead
  • The sources and captions of photos, videos and graphics
  • Legal, privacy, child-safety and other sensitive considerations

Checking photos and videos

  • We verify the source, time, place and context of photos and videos.
  • We check whether old images are being passed off as new events, or have been edited or manipulated.
